How Acceptance Lays the Groundwork for Growth in Our PANS family
Aug 15, 2022
Acceptance of PANS may get a bad rap. However, when we use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy tools, we learn to accept things as they are NOW so that we free up our energy to change what we CAN as PANS parents.
It helps me to make a list with two columns. The first column is "things I CAN'T change right now about PANS" and the second column is "things I CAN do today about PANS".
This is how my list looked today:
THINGS I CAN'T CHANGE ABOUT PANS RIGHT NOW:
-
Lagging skills that still exist for my daughter
-
My daughter's discomfort with changes (school starting soon, looking into colleges)
THINGS I CAN CHANGE ABOUT PANS RIGHT NOW:
-
Continue to reduce accommodations for my daughter gradually so that she gains confidence and reduces her anxiety in the long run
-
Focus on taking one day at a time and having realistic expectations of my daughter and myself
